5 new changes to Alberta immigration policy

Alberta, one of Canada's most dynamic provinces, is a top destination for immigrants seeking new opportunities, a high quality of life and a thriving economy.

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) plays a vital role in welcoming skilled workers, entrepreneurs and families to contribute to the growth of the province.

In March and April 2025, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) announced five important changes:

1. Acceptance of PTE Core test: From 1 April 2025, AAIP will begin accepting the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core test as a language assessment option for all immigration streams.

2. Increased application fees for labour streams: Application fees for labour streams, including the Alberta Opportunity Stream and Alberta Express Entry Stream, have increased to $1,500 CAD from April 1, 2025.

3. Updating Express Entry Profile: Candidates can now update their Express Entry profile after receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from AAIP, allowing more flexibility in adjusting personal information.

4. Alberta Opts Out of Federal Work Permit Policy: Alberta decided to opt out of the federal policy that allows work permits to be issued to those with provincial nominations, affecting the work permit application process for AAIP candidates.

5. End of Family Connections and Occupation in Demand Pathway: AAIP has ended this pathway, meaning candidates are no longer prioritized based on family connections or occupations in demand in Alberta.

These changes are intended to improve the efficiency and transparency of the immigration process in Alberta.
