That is the new regulation issued effective from April 11, 2025 by the Trump administration: “All foreign citizens present in the United States for more than 30 days must register with the federal government. Failure to comply with this law is considered a crime punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both… Otherwise, you will be arrested, fined, deported, and never allowed to enter the United States again,” said Karoline Leavitt, assistant to US President Donald Trump and White House press secretary.
Even those with valid visas or green cards must carry proof of legal residency at all times.
Violations can result in fines up to $5,000 USD, imprisonment of up to 30 days, or deportation.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines, individuals who arrive in the United States after April 11 must register within 30 days if they do not have registration documents. (For example, if you arrive in the United States after April 11 and do not have confirmation of registration (registration card, A-number, I-94 with registration information, etc.), you are required to register within 30 days of your arrival.) Even children who turn 14, regardless of their previous registration, must re-register and submit fingerprints within 30 days of their birthday.
